Outset
“At this moment, then, the Negroes must begin to do the very thing which they have been taught that they cannot do.” This quote was once said by Carter G. Woodson. It related to the topic I chose, and the topic was “The 54th Massachusetts Regiment.” The Regiment took place during a time that Blacks weren’t allowed to help fight in the Civil War. Before I researched this topic I knew very little about this Regiment. Alternatively, I knew two things about the Regiment. One, that the Regiment took place during the Civil War, and two that it consisted of Black Soldiers. This seemed ironic to me because the Civil War was a War over Black Slaves. The North was Anti-Slavery (Union), the South was Pro-Slavery (Confederacy), and the War was supposed to lead to the end or continuation of Slavery. Surprisingly, it baffled me that Whites allowed Blacks to help fight during the Civil war. Mainly, because blacks were seen as property and inhumane. Therefore, I wanted to know why Blacks were allowed to fight in the war and “What was The 54th Massachusetts Regiment?” I predicted that Blacks were allowed to fight in the Civil War because the North or South needed more people to help fight in the War. This led me to the topic question “What was the 54th Massachusetts Regiment?” The topic relates to class because we’ve been studying the Civil War, and it matters to me because before the Civil War Blacks were told that they didn’t have the ability to do many things. I think it’s important to know the impact Black Soldiers had after they were given a chance to show their capabilities as human beings.
